The Lost in Europe consortium has won the 2024 Daphne Caruana Galizia Prize for Journalism for their groundbreaking investigation, “More than 50,000 unaccompanied migrant children vanished in Europe in the past three years.” This cross-border journalism project uncovered the staggering disappearance of 51,433 children who arrived in Europe between 2021 and 2023, bringing urgent attention to a largely overlooked crisis and calling for critical reforms to protect unaccompanied minors across EU countries.
Established by the European Parliament in 2020, the prize honors exceptional journalism that upholds the values of the EU, such as human dignity, freedom, democracy, and human rights. The award is named after Daphne Caruana Galizia, a courageous journalist assassinated in 2017, and is presented annually on the anniversary of her death, October 16, at the European Parliament in Strasbourg. The €20,000 prize celebrates journalism’s role in defending the voiceless and shining light on systemic failures across Europe.
