For journalists in Greece: Apply now for a full 10-week fellowship at the Columbia University School of Journalism in New York City

Applications deadline expired

We are excited to announce a Data Journalism Fellowship Program that includes six full 10-week fellowships at Columbia University School of Journalism’s Lede Program in New York City, and is implemented with the exclusive support of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) and in partnership with iMEdD (incubator for Media Education and Development).

Both new and experienced media professionals in Greece are eligible to apply for a scholarship to Columbia University School of Journalism, one of the world’s leading journalism schools. Applications are open until April 15. The 10-week summer program runs from June 3 to August 9, and focuses on data journalism, as well as data processing, analysis and visualization applications. During the course of the Program and upon its completion, participants will receive strategic guidance from professionals at iMEdD. The SNF scholarships fully cover travel, accommodation, tuition, transportation, and food.

“Excellent journalism is essential for democracy, and knowing how to work with data is essential for good journalism,” said iMEdD Managing Director, SNF Dialogues Executive Director, and journalist Anna-Kynthia Bousdoukou. “The fellows will return to Greece better equipped to the work, painstaking and sublime, of uncovering hard truths and serving the public interest. We can’t wait to collaborate with them at iMEdD and to see what they will produce.”

“Data journalism goes beyond dry programming tutorials. The Lede Program teaches the practical, real-world skills that enable everything from deep investigative work to engaging data visualizations,” said Jonathan Soma, John S. and James L. Knight Professor of Professional Practice in Data Journalism and Director of Lede. “Pulling insight from data is a core part of reporting and is an achievable goal no matter your level of technical expertise.”

Detailed information regarding the Program is available here: https://ledeprogram.com/how-to-apply/

SNF’s support for the implementation of the Data Journalism Fellowship Program at Columbia University’s School of Journalism is part of the Foundation’s broader effort to promote and enhance transparency, independence and excellence in journalism, most notably through its support of iMEdD.

The grant for the Fellowship Program follows support for a previous three-year pilot Fellowship Program (2017 – 2019) at the School of Journalism, focusing on data journalism, investigative journalism, and multimedia reporting, which was attended by 53 journalists from Greece.

iMEdD has previously collaborated with Columbia University School of Journalism for the implementation of Newsroom Essentials under the Ideas Zone axis in Greece, covering a variety of topics, such as data journalism applications and the concept of entrepreneurship in journalism.
