For the third consecutive year, iMEdD collaborated with the Department of Communication, Media and Culture at Panteion University, offering a hands-on training in podcast production to undergraduate students of the Advertising and Public Relations Lab (ADandPRLab), which is directed by Associate Professor Betty Tsakarestou, and co-led by Assistant Professor Stavros Kaperonis.
Panagiotis Menegos, Journalist and Podcast Content and Production Manager at iMEdD, and Kelly Kiki, Data Editor at iMEdD, led a practical workshop on podcast production, which was addressed to 100 third-year students.
The primary objective of the workshop was to provide students with a step-by-step introduction to the world of podcasting, equipping them with the tools to develop and launch their first podcast. From selecting the right equipment to mastering recording and audio production techniques, students gained practical insights into crafting engaging journalistic podcasts.
The broader theme of this year’s workshop was “Gen Z & Resilience”, with students choosing to place a particular emphasis on wellbeing and mental health. Students explored how podcasting can be used to amplify important social conversations and provide a platform for thoughtful storytelling.
The workshop consisted of two key lectures, each designed to support students through different stages of the podcast production process:
- The first session emphasized storytelling techniques and editorial decision-making in podcasting. iMEdD journalist Kostas Koukoumakas shared insights from the investigative projects, Hooligan Express and Trauma, providing students with real-world examples of compelling audio journalism.
- During the second session, the student teams presented preliminary concepts for their podcast episodes, receiving direct feedback and guidance before moving into production.
Students formed 20 groups to produce their own podcasts. They applied their newly acquired skills to every stage of the production process—from research and scripting to recording and editing. The presentation and commentary of the podcasts took place on 7 February at the iMEdD offices, where the students discussed the audio result of their work with iMEdD journalists.
During the last session, the students took part in an open discussion, receiving valuable feedback from both their fellow students and industry professionals. Compared to previous years, this year there was an even greater emphasis on audio quality and feedback between the groups, fostering a deeper understanding of what makes a podcast stand out.
*The workshop was held in the framework of Ideas Zone, iMEdD’s training pillar.
