SNF DIALOGUES: Facebook Down

Even as a whistleblower was casting new light on how the world’s most popular platform “betrayed democracy,” the biggest blackout in the history of social media left people around the globe disconnected for almost 7 hours.

SNF Dialogues will hold a live webcast on Wednesday, November 3, 2021 at 18:30 (EET) at snfdialogues.org to discuss the complex effects of Facebook and other social media on democracy, society, and us as individuals—and to raise questions about the platform’s problematic business model and the need for regulation and social cohesion.

With big tech companies bending the rules in the name of profit and people treated as products in a shadow economic system, it’s an open question whether our institutions are ultimately capable of reining in Silicon Valley’s ambitions.

Inaction on the spread of fake news and coordinated verbal abuse, systematic misuse of personal data, and the sociopolitical and psychological consequences of using social media are just some of the issues that will be explored during the online Dialogues event.

Taking part in the discussion will be:
Carole Jane Cadwalladr, Investigative Journalist, Author
Nicolas Kayser-Bril, Data Journalist, Reporter, Algorithm Watch

Weigh-in at Dialogues: Register here to connect live, via video and audio, and submit your questions and comments directly to the panelists.

The discussion will be held in English with simultaneous interpretation into Greek.
