Cross-border data investigation on femicides in Europe

The Mediterranean Institute of Investigative Journalism (MIIR) in cooperation with 18 journalistic teams conducted the first pan-European cross-border data investigation on femicide. The research, entitled The Undeclared War on Women in Europe, was carried out as part of the European Data Journalism Network and attempts to shed light on the gaps created by the cumulative lack of up-to-date data on violence and deaths of women in Europe.

Based on a primary search of statistics from the relevant national authorities for the years 2010-2021, MIIR has created a new database that provides important findings on the patterns of gender-based violence in European countries.

Data analysis was carried out with the assistance of iMEdD Lab and journalist Thanasis Troboukis, focusing on the years of the Covid-19 pandemic, and visualization of the results concerning femicides in a total of 28 countries.

The research was conducted from October 2022 to February 2023.

14 more EDJNet members were also involved: Deutsche Welle (Germany), Openpolis, OBC Transeuropa (Italy), Civio, El Confidencial (Spain), Divergente (Portugal), CINS (Serbia), Pod črto (Slovenia), BIQdata/Gazeta Wyborcza, Frontstory.pl (Poland), Deník Referendum (Czech Republic), EUrologus/HVG (Hungary), PressOne (Romania), Journalism++ (Sweden).

Research data was also provided by the journalism groups Noteworthy (Ireland), Investigace (Czech Republic) and Atlatszo (Hungary).
